Wisdom Teeth Removal

We provide wisdom teeth removal treatment within our Broadmeadow Surgical Centre or day stay general anaesthesia in Hospital if required.
Why do Wisdom teeth need to be removed?
Not all patients will require wisdom teeth removal. This is because for some, their wisdom teeth would have developed and emerged without causing damage to adjacent teeth, bone, tongue or gums.
As our dental care and nutrition have improved, there is less and less room for wisdom teeth. The average adult has thirty-two teeth by age eighteen: sixteen teeth on the top and sixteen teeth on the bottom. Each tooth in the mouth has a specific name and function, however, there is rarely room to accommodate wisdom teeth (third molars). When wisdom teeth attempt to erupt through the gum tissue it can result in immense pain and discomfort.
At Hunter Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Centre, we will always assess the condition of your mouth before making any recommendations for treatment. In your consultation one of our specialist surgeons will listen to your concerns, examine the position of your wisdom teeth in-depth by taking x-rays and keep you informed of their findings and recommendations.
Your safety is our first priority…
All surgery is performed under appropriate anaesthesia to maximise patient comfort. This may include local anaesthesia (injections to numb the area requiring surgery) which is undertaken in the rooms, or sedation / general anaesthesia (where you are semi-conscious or unconscious) which is undertaken in a hospital environment.

Why do only some people require wisdom teeth removal?
Most commonly, cases where wisdom teeth require extraction include impacted wisdom teeth and partially erupted wisdom teeth.
What are impacted wisdom teeth?
Impacted wisdom teeth are wisdom teeth that have developed at an angle. If the tooth is pushing against the bone or an adjacent tooth, it could cause damage to the tooth or bone, pain, discomfort, crowding and swelling.
What are partially erupted teeth?
Partially erupted teeth are teeth that have breached the gums but are not completely erupted. This can cause infection, swelling, bleeding and abscesses as well as damage to the hard and soft tissues around it.
